DIY: Homemade Vanilla Extract

There are a ton of DIY ideas out there. Pinterest is a great source, and of course there are whole books, magazines, and TV channels devoted to DIY projects. And while I appreciate that almost anything can be “DIY-ed” with enough time, effort, and talent, I only attempt DIY projects that are on the simple side. So I might not spend hours rebuilding a pallet into furniture or constructing a tiny terrarium inside an old lightbulb, but I will definitely make my own vanilla extract.

Seriously, there are so many reasons to add vanilla extract to your DIY list.

Two ingredients.

So much less expensive than storebought.

An excuse to buy a pretty bottle.

Feeling all foodie and gourmet as you tell people “These cookies include my special homemade vanilla extract.”

And just about the easiest DIY project you will find.

The hardest part is waiting two months for your extract to be ready. But it’s definitely worth it, so grab your ingredients (I got the bottle and vanilla beans from and DIY your way to a beautiful bottle of homemade vanilla extract!

Homemade Vanilla Extract

8 oz. vodka

3 whole vanilla beans

Slice the vanilla beans lengthwise, leaving 1/2 inch at each end to keep the bean intact. Add the beans and vodka to a bottle (8.5 oz. or larger) with an airtight seal. Store in a cool, dark place for at least two months, shaking occasionally.
