Kids TV Shows that Won’t Make You Want to Throw Your TV Through the Wall

There are so many choices for kid-friendly TV shows out there, but sadly many (if not most) of them range from mediocre to downright terrible. The shows full of annoyingly loud music and bad behavior, or the ones that exist solely to sell merchandise. But there are 3 shows we’ve found (on Netflix, where we watch most things) that the kids enjoy and are at least tolerable to Big Man and me. Here are some of our favorites, in no particular order:

  • Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. This shows exists in the Make-Believe world introduced my Mister Rogers and follows the adventures of Daniel Tiger and his family and friends. The shows are written around teaching certain principles (like how to handle different emotions, interactions with friends, doctor visits, potty training, etc.) but don’t feel preachy or heavy-handed. Little Lady especially loves this show since there is so much music: each “lesson” gets a little musical phrase that makes it easy to remember. Family is very central to the show, and I especially love how both parents get equal screen time and respect; Dad isn’t just there as the annoying goofball like in so many shows.
  • Phineas & Ferb. My sister-in-law introduced this show to us and I’m so glad she did. It’s about the summer adventures of two brothers and their part-time-secret-agent pet platypus.  They design and build amazing things and have fantastic adventures. It’s a funny and smart show with a catchy theme song, and there is also a full length movie which is just as enjoyable.
  • Peep and the Big Wide World. Probably the most underrated show on the list, it was a random find for us when going through the Netflix kids section. It’s about the adventures of a Peep (a chick), Chirp (a bird), and most importantly Quack (a duck) as they explore their world and usually fail to learn anything. The stories are simple, but full of subtle humor and adventurous spirit. The show also incorporates some live action sequences of children exploring nature or building things. Big Man and I actually enjoy (not just tune out) watching it with the kids, and Quack is one of the best characters ever.

What about you? What are your recommendations for good kids TV?
